Women In Aviation App Design

Women in Aviation International (WAI) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the encouragement and advancement of women in all aviation career fields and interests.

Project Background:

The Women in Aviation rebrand and app project is a passion project for me. I have a strong interest in the aviation industry and aim to create a platform that connects and supports young women who share this passion. My goal is to foster mentorship and provide opportunities for advancement within the industry.

Project Objective:

This project is centered around four core values: mentorship, curiosity, encouragement, and advancement. To achieve these goals, the app will feature a range of key features, including flight logging, personalized mentorship connections, a dynamic community section, the ability to join local chapters, and a comprehensive event discovery feature.

Value Proposition:

For young women who are interested in aviation, the WAI app and brand redesign will foster mentorship and industry connection.

01 Research

I conducted various forms of research beginning with desk research, competitor research, and user Interviews.

For interviews I gathered 10 women between the ages of 17 and 24, all student pilots. Below is my interview analysis of two interviews using the says, does, thinks, feels method. Overall I found that young women who are looking to go into the aviation industry want better ways to find women mentors and mentorship events in their area.

02 Personas, Brand Story

Based on my interview and desk research I created two personas, using the most common pain points and personality traits. At this stage, I also began redesigning the Women In Aviation logo and began branding analysis.

03 Vision and Mission

The vision for the Women in Aviation logo redesign is to create a modern and concise design that reflects WAI's strength and rising power. The new logo will represent the growth of women in the aviation industry and the success of our non-profit organization in empowering young women in the field.

The Women in Aviation organization has been a leading advocate for gender equality in the aviation industry for over 30 years. However, as the organization has grown and evolved, the original logo no longer effectively represents WAI's mission and goals.

The new logo features bold letters that convey a sense of strength and determination. I wanted to make the logo more concise, so I simplified the design and removed any unnecessary elements. The airplane pointing up represents the rise of non-profit and the rise of young women into the aviation industry.

I believe that the new Women in Aviation logo will better represent the organization and mission. It is my hope that the redesigned logo will inspire and empower young women to pursue careers in aviation and help continue to make progress toward greater gender equality in the industry.

04 Sketch

Based on my research I began with some low fi sketches and began moving forward with the app’s overall design. During this phase I kept in mind the main user pain points and presented my finished sketches to the same 10 users.

From this I gathered 4 main findings:

  • Users want ‘Mentorship’ dedicated section.

    • Users loved the idea of the mentorship section. The idea of a messaging feature peaked interest.

  • Registration/Sign Up

    • Users found registration to be smooth and easy.

  • Customization feature

    • Users loved the customization feature for pilots, and were excited about inputting hours and flight log information.
