Project Background:

This project was a deliverable for a UX design certification course at Brainstation. All parts of the project were completed by me.

Objective:

Online returns incur unnecessary costs on businesses, create unnecessary waste, and has caused many brands to begin charging consumers for returns. My objective of this project was to create a solution to this problem that could be added as an extension to any online fashion marketplace.

Value Proposition:

For online shopping customers who struggle to decide what size to buy the “MySize” extension will translate customer measurements into avatars that will give a clear idea of how clothing items will fit.

“18 percent of all online orders are returned.” MySize looks to solve that.

User testing and analysis

01 Research

I conducted various forms of research beginning with desk research, competitor research, and user Interviews.

For interviews I gathered 7 people of varying ages and occupational background.

70 percent of returns were caused by poor fit or style, suggesting that shopping tools are a key lever for preventing returns and improving consumer experience.

02 Persona

Based on desk and interview research, I identified the goals and pain points of users, as well as a cohesive brand story to ensure that I can create a seamless user experience.

03 Sketch

Based on my research I began with some low fi sketches and began moving forward with the extension’s overall design. During this phase I kept in mind the main user pain points and presented my finished sketches to the same 7 users.

From this I gathered 4 main findings:

  • Users want more ‘step by step’ guidance on how to use their avatar.

    • When shown the first sketches, users were confused on where the extension would show up and how to access their avatar. They suggested a more in depth walk through.

  • Registration/Sign Up

    • Users were hesitant to provide email and bodily measurements in order to access their avatar.

  • Customization feature

    • Users loved the customization features of MySize. The ability for the app to customize based on a provided photo peaked interest.

  • Users love the ‘extension’ concept

    • Once users got past the sign in/create account page they were excited to find out their customizations would be saved and used for all future marketplace needs.

04 Define

From the sketch/ low fi testing, I learned that sign up features and customization needed to be as quick and easy as possible to hold user interest. From this I added a new feature the “Preset Avatar”. This is an avatar that does not need to be customized and will only need a user’s height and weight for use.

In this phase I also further explored the Information architecture and taxonomy of MySize. My goal being to bring cohesiveness and consistency to the extension.

05 Design

My goal in adding MySize to the online marketplace was to make it seem like it was always meant to be a part of the page. I did not want MySize to show up like a chrome extension, but more as an extension of the actual marketplace page.

  • Largest Constraint

    • time constraint- I did not have the time to make my own avatars that could be prototyped so I utilized ReadyPlayerMe to create something similar to what I had in mind.

      • If given more time to pursue this project I would find a better way to design the avatars and make the customizations much more in depth.

06 Solution

Once the first prototype was completed. I conducted user testing via Zoom with 4 different individuals ranging in age and occupation. My goal was to gain insight on what could be improved or changed within the prototype to make the experience as seamless as possible.

Below are my main testing takeaways:

  • Use more than height and weight when determining avatar measurements

  • For drag and drop add cursor change or visual cue to make more accessible

  • Users want to see more of the avatar (side, back, walking)

  • Users want a recommended size option on the avatar

Based on my user testing, I edited and finalized the MySize prototype.
